Burglars Who Don’t Break In

According to the FBI, about 30 percent of burglaries occur without a break-in. That means that 30 percent of burglaries happened because a window or door was unlocked or open. After reading that, you might be thinking that you never leave doors open for burglars to come in. But do you?

1. When you are working in the yard, do you leave the garage door open and work out of sight of the garage? If yes, then not only are you providing an opportunity, but you are also advertising what you own in the garage. Then again, it’s convenient to leave the garage door open while you are mowing the lawn. What is a solution to this issue? Carry a garage door opener with you so you can easily open and close the door. Also, make sure any doors from the garage to the house are locked.

2. Do you leave the door to your home unlocked while you go visit a neighbor? If yes, then you are providing an opportunity. While it might be inconvenient to lock the door every time you leave the house, that is the best way to protect your home while away, even if only for a few minutes.

3. Do you have a hidden spare key? If yes, then is it in a spot most people would look—such as under the door mat? If yes, then it’s best to find a better spot. Ask some people you trust to look outside your house and tell you six places they would look for a spare key. Obviously, it’s not ideal to select any of those spots.

Last, but not least, every single time you leave the house, make sure all the doors and windows are closed and locked.
